Get into Paddle Boarding

The latest surfing wave to hit the beach – stand up paddle boards. This style of surfing is the latest craze and has recently seen huge success. Stand up paddle boarding is a great way to get exercise while having fun at the same time. Since this is something everyone who tries it will enjoy it’s a great choice for staying in shape and exercising. Paddle boarding is not terribly difficult, it just takes practice and determination to get good at it. With some paddle boarding lessons and lots of practice, anyone can learn to ride a stand up paddle board and enjoy the health benefits that come with it. Stand up paddle boarding allows one’s whole body gets a “core” work-out more so than though other surfing styles.

There is a big difference between stand up paddling and paddling while laying down on the board. Stand up paddle boarding uses different muscle groups and a more complete exercise regiment is experienced. Beginners will be practicing to get better so they can take advantage of this technique, while experienced surfers that try it may never return to their old way of surfing. It recommended for everyone to practice and get comfortable with a stand up paddle boarding before entering the line-up, but this is sure to be a surfing style that will only grow in popularity in the coming years.

Stand up paddle boards have tract pads for better grip to stay on your feet, and standing up to paddle instead of sitting down provides the added benefit of getting a different workout while you surf. Stand up paddle boards are the next popular craze in surfing. However, making the quick switch from laying to standing as the wave arrives can be extremely challenging, especially for beginners. These boards make it easier to get into the wave and jumpstart your surfing experience by keeping you upright the whole time. You can transition in and out of waves faster, and the entire experience can be more enjoyable. Furthermore, you get to work your arms while you paddle upright.

A stand up paddle boarding workout is similar to the one your arms get from paddling a boat with oars. Stand up paddle boarding uses the same principle, so your arms and torso will be getting a great workout. You’ll be able to rest your arms while you surf, but get ready to start paddling once the wave is gone. It’s this unique combination of fun and exercise that makes paddle boarding so popular.

Stand up paddle boarding uses paddles that usually cost a couple hundred dollars new – look for a couple cheap used ones to have on hand. To get the right size paddle you would generally add 8 inches to your standing height. Getting the right size paddle is important so ask for help if you’re not sure. A paddle that is too short won’t help move you and one that is too long will slow you down.

A Guide to Buying a SUP

Now that you tried stand up paddle boarding for yourself by taking a lesson, renting a SUP from your local surf shop, or using a friend’s stuff it’s time to consider your own purchase. The equipment is pricey and buying a SUP should be done carefully. SUP package prices are not cheap and range from a low of $800 to greater than $2000. The two main pieces of SUP equipment are the board and a paddle. There are three basic things to think about when buying SUP gear; 1) the rider’s weight and height, 2) how experienced is the rider, and 3) in what conditions will the board be used.

These general guidelines for the rider’s size can be used when buying a SUP. In general, longer wider boards can help the novice learn faster and have better success when first starting out in the sport. Buying a smaller, narrower boards makes it more difficult to learn. People weighing less than 150 pounds can typically use a board around 10 to 10 1/2 feet having a width of about 27 inches. These SUP board sizes are a good choice for many lighter riders, particularly women. If your weight is in the 150 to 200 pound range, consider buying a board that is 11 to 12 feet and at least 31 inches wide. Riders, weighing 200 to 250 pounds should look for boards longer than 12 feet and 31 inches in width. Buying a board greater than 12 1/2 feet and 31 inches wide is a good choice for people weighing more than 250 pounds. Now on to buying a paddle for your SUP.

The basic rule for buying a paddle is it should be no more than 8 to 10 inches the rider’s height. There are a few paddle types such as fiberglass and carbon fiber. Typically, fiberglass paddles cost $200 to $260. Expect to pay $300 to $400 for a carbon fiber paddle. If your on a tight budget buying an aluminum shaft paddle with a plastic blade is a good choice for under $200. Since there are a lot of board designs and paddles on the market do your homework first before buying and ask questions when making your decisions. Some SUP manufactures include Yolo, Surftech, Jerry Lopez, C4, etc. with many stock and custom options. Most offer package deals for the board and paddle purchase.

If you’re just starting out in the sport, buying a wider board will be more stable and help you learn faster. You will spend more time out of the water on the top of the board and have better success. Unless your a natural athlete or have previous surfing experience it’s good to get an lesson from your local surf shop or a buddy who already knows the techniques for standing on and paddling the board before buying anything. After you become a better SUP surfer you can consider buying a smaller size board. The paddle length however will generally not change unless you are growing taller to warrant a longer paddle.

There is typically two different places a SUP will be ridden. One, which is the most common especially for beginners, is on flat water such as lakes, slow moving streams, and bays or flat oceans. The other is in on ocean waves in the surf line-up or down fast rivers or stream swith some mild rapids. The style of board will depend on where the rider will be using the SUP. Just make sure to understand the shape and size of the board given the conditions where it will be used. Most surf shops will have the different type of boards for the various places they can be used.

Hopefully, this information gives you a better idea about buying your first SUP board and paddle. Use these guidelines as exactly that – guidelines. Doing solid research on the internet will make your buying experience more rewarding. If you have some knowledge about SUPs it will be easier to ask the importnat questions when talking with people about your purchase. So, get out on a SUP and learn the basics before you spend your hard earned cash on that new or used board and paddle.

Discover the fun of Paddle Boards

Paddle boarding and stand up paddle boarding are FUN! The use of stand up paddle boards has had a huge increase in popularity recently. While it is a different surfing style some surfers say it might be easier than traditional surfing. Paddle boards were first used for learning to surf, but as time passed it developed into its own sport. Paddle boarding gives you an opportunity to enjoy the unique view of the water and it can be used in more than just ocean waters – you can use a paddle board in rivers, bays and lakes to have tons of fun while getting a great workout.

Beginners and novices that want to purchase a paddle board should test one out first by renting from a local surf shop that carries paddle boards for rent. Since your first board could be a big purchase it is better to try it out if possible. Internet research can go a long way to helping better understand and finding information on the subject at first. While many surf shops carry these boards most have a limited number of models and design to choose from, so it may take a some time to find the right board for your skill level. An alternative to visiting numerous surf shops is to use the internet for finding the right paddle board.

Looking for paddle boards online will save you tons of time and effort finding the right board that fits your needs. The internet provides many sites offering a large array of designs, styles, and shapes of paddle boards. Doing some research will help you find the right board at the right price in a short amount of time compared to traditional shopping. Many online retailers of paddle boards provide pictures and descriptions of each paddle board they offer with boards being shipped to your destination of choice. These benefits can help you decide which board is right for you much easier. Once you find what you are looking for in a paddle board it is easy to compare prices and equipment from many different sites so you get the best deal for your money. You can also then compare what is comparable at your local surf shop if you want to get your hands on a board before actually buying.

Although some say it is easier than typical surfing, paddle boarding can be tricky as well.

SUP Surfing

Stand Up Paddle Board Surfing or “Sups” for short, is fast becoming a global sport that in some areas is shouting as the new global surfing phenomenon. Stand up paddle board surfing became quite popular but, it seems only in Hawaii, as the rest of the world was not overly impressed, and as the ’60′s moved to the ’70′s the “Sups” were all but pushed aside by the “short board” era. As a group of Australians were ripping the tour by winning surfing titles galore, and in Hawaii’s own back yard, the idea did not sit well with the Hawaiians.

Stand Up Paddle Board Surfing - originated in Polynesia, but the Hawaiians took it on as their own and developed it in the ’60′s. They started paddle board surfing to instruct large groups of learners and the higher stance on the board gave them a better viewpoint, to sight the pending swells “outside”.

Paddle board surfing uses a single paddle with a long handle to propel the rider forward, and not much has changed today. However, paddle board surfing has again increased in popularity and has been suggested by athletes as a total work out machine that you can do standing up. In effect, paddle board surfing gives you a strong “core’ work out. You can do it on still water anywhere, or as a supplement to surfing.

Stand Up Paddle Boards can be best described as over sized surfboards that are fairly fat, but thicker or fatter than some, to offer good flotation. “Sup’s” can be “Custom Made” at a hefty price, but most are basic model shop boards, to keep the cost down, and most board makers and surf shops keep a standard or high performance model on hand in the showroom. These models are between, generally 9’6″ up to 12’6″ in some cases for the larger user, with the smallest size being most popular as a performance model. They also feature padded deck grip with concave or double concave bottoms, with three fins for turn and directional stability. “Sup’s” can be used pretty well anywhere, e.g. on lakes and rivers, or for the total work-out, in your local surf line-up.

This once forgotten surfing style, paddle board surfing, is experiencing a rejuvenating comeback in the world of water sports and surfing styles. When used in the surf for a complete fun work out, is set to explode in a global way by exploring a new way of surfing previously known to many avid water lovers. Rest assured paddle board surfing is here to stay in the surfing world.

Paddle Boards beginnings

Surprisingly enough the paddle boards have been around for a long time – since the early nineteen hundreds. Thomas Edward Blake is credited as the pioneer in paddle boards construction. In 1926, Blake built a replica of the previously ignored olo surfboard (traditionally made from wiliwili wood) ridden by ancient Hawaiian kings. He lightened his redwood replica by drilling it full of holes and then covering them, creating the first ever hollow board. Thus the the first modern paddle boards were created. Two years later, in 1928 using this same 16 ft (4.9 m), 120 lb (54 kg) paddle board, Blake won the first ever Mainland surf contest, the Pacific Coast Surf riding Championships, an event integrating both surfing and paddling. Blake’s love for the paddle board was shown back in Hawaii where he would go on to break virtually every established paddling record available. He set half-mile and 100-yard records that stood until 1955.

Using his ~60 pound, drastically modified chambered hollow-board in 1932 Blake out-paddled top California watermen Pete Peterson and Wally Burton in the first ever Mainland to Catalina crossing race (29 miles in 5 hours, 53 minutes). He avidly promoted his creation over the next decade as a lifeguarding rescue tool and Blake-influenced hollow boards (called “cigar boards” by reporters and later “kook boxes” by surfers) would be used in roughly equal proportion to solid plank boards for both paddling and surfing until the late 1930s Hot Curl innovations led wave-riding in a new direction. The fundamentals of Blake’s 1926 design remain relevant even today for modern paddle boards – only the advancements in materials technologies have made boards much lighter and more versatile in design.

Paddle boards experienced a rebirth in the early 1980s after Los Angeles County lifeguard Rabbi Norm Shifren’s “Waterman Race”. This 22 mile race from Point Dume to Malibu inspired surf journalist Craig Lockwood to begin production on a high quality stock paddleboard—known as the “Waterman.” This design remains a popular choice today. Surfboard shapers, Joe Bark from L.A. and Mike Eaton from San Diego began production of paddle boards shortly after the historic race, and soon became two of the largest U.S. paddle board makers. Eventually the two began producing nearly half all of the estimated paddle boards made each year in the U.S. today. L.A. lifeguards Gibby Gibson and Buddy Bohn revived the Catalina Classic event in 1982 for a field of 10 competitors. Around the same time in Hawaii, the annual Independence Day Paddle Board Race from Sunset to Waimea was drawing a few hundred competitors, many using surfboards due to lack of proper paddle boards on the Islands. As paddlers began ordering paddle boards from the Mainland, local surfboard shapers like Dennis Pang (now one of Hawaii’s largest paddle board makers) moved quickly to fill the local niche. On both fronts, paddle boarding has been consistently gaining momentum and popularity.
